1) Surroundings for Nepalese girls before and today

Every year 5000 to 7000 poor Nepalese girls are sold to India crossing the boarder, which is without boundary fences for the most of the line. The victims are mainly 14 years old to 18. The majority is under 16 years old; some of them are even under 5 to 7 years old before their first period.

In Nepal children from poor families do not receive primary education or any level of. They are counted for working hands. They are always driven to do domestic jobs, look after livestock and their infant siblings.

The country is short of social capitals including fundamental infrastructures. Literacy in poor rural areas is extremely low. People there hardly have access to mass media. Isolated from most kinds of information, they remain ignorant and simple minded. Innocent girls and their parents are easily deceived by trafficking recruiters with their tactful tempting. For a sum equivalent to tens of thousand yen to one hundred thousand yen or a little more, a girl is sold to one of brothels in G.B. Road Delhi, or Sonagachi or Khalighat Kolkata, or Kamatipura Mumbai. (Aforementioned amount is not money the girl or her parents receive. See 2) and 3) here.) Recently known is that Nepalese girls are ‘exported’ to the Gulf countries and Hong Kong from India.

2) Trafficking system

The network consists of three players, namely brothel owners in India (mainly Nepalese and Bengali), brokers (Indians), and recruiters (Nepalese).

A recruiter marks families in extreme poverty in peasant villages. He usually speaks to a girl walking toward a farm. Pretending really kind and sincere, he says, “I can introduce you to a carpet factory in Kathmandu. Won’t you to work there?” or “If you like I may find a job in India of a house-maid.” The innocent girl, out of sheer desire to help her desperate parents and to escape from hard agricultural jobs at the same time, instantly believes in what the guy told and follows him.
The kidnaper takes the girl to a boarder point, where he delivers her to the broker for a sum of 3000 to 5000 yen. Then the broker accompanies the girl to an Indian city and sells her off to a brothel for some tens of thousand yen to a hundred thousand or a bit more.

3) Her life in the brothel

On arrival she is compelled to sell her body for time. No salary or allowance is paid. What provided are just poor quality and volume of meals, a few clothes, and cheap cosmetics. Her price to a customer: 100 to a few hundreds yen. She has to take 10 to 20 customers every day. The customers are mostly from the bottom of society, too.

Should she refuse any demand of the brothel owner or of the customer, she is inflicted heavy violence; she is just a sex-slave there. The brothels tie up with local Mafias. The girls are watched for 24 hours , no way to escape. And, rescue is also a risky job for a certain relation the brothels have with some of local police.

Unless she is thrown out of the brothel house because of HIV or other serious diseases or because of reaching her 30 years old plus when lesser customers want her, the girl or woman is retained for continuous toil for 10 years or longer. An estimation of the HIV infected is 3.5 millions to 4 millions in India. The major channel of infection is the brothels; a common knowledge. The brothel owners ostensibly recommend the customers use condoms but never insist on. The brothers are really nests of germs and viruses of STD, HIV, viral hepatitis, and TB. It is worried that HIV has already penetrated into more than half of the girls.

4) Why are Nepalese girls so demanded?

Some say 150,000 Nepalese girls are in sex business in India; others 200,000 who are undergoing that inhuman conditions. And they count nearly half of total prostitutes in India, so alleged. But why is there so high demand for them? An account gives three reasons.

@Skin color

The Indian males, the potential ‘customers’ like Nepalese girls for their ‘white’ skin color, especially of those from Mongoloid ethnic races or akin to it. Despite Mongoloid has been classified as ‘yellow’, they see them white as compared to average Indian girls. The skin color ‘white’ symbolizes a certain varna (caste by tribe names) that belongs to a high ranking caste. They seem to try looking for an admirable image of lady of the class on the face of a girl they choose.

A Virginity

Because of high regard to virginity by Hinduism that is the religion of the majority of the nation, the customers wish to buy a young girl with an ‘atmosphere’ of virgin.

B Ignorance of HIV/AIDS scientific knowledge

The customers concern about HIV/AIDS at least but do not have right knowledge in any depth. They just imagine a girl with less experience might be less risky,. That is a reason for their preference of very young girls.
